SmartScan is a document scanning and OCR application that helps you scan, organize, search, and back up your documents.
This Privacy Policy explains what information SmartScan accesses, how it is used, where your information is stored, and what choices you have.
We have written this policy in plain language so it is easy to understand.
Your scanned documents are stored on your device.
SmartScan does not operate its own cloud storage or backend server for storing your documents.
Your document images and OCR text remain on your device unless you choose to use Google Drive Backup.
If you enable Google Drive Backup, SmartScan uses your Google account and Google Drive to back up your selected documents to your own Google Drive account.
If you draw a signature to sign a PDF, it is stored privately on your device and reused only when you choose to stamp it onto a document.
SmartScan uses your device's camera when you choose to scan a document.
The camera is used to capture images of documents for scanning and processing.
SmartScan does not continuously record or monitor your camera.
Camera access is only used when required for scanning.
If you choose to import an existing photo from your device's gallery to use as a scan page, SmartScan reads and processes only the photo you select, just like a new scan, and it is never used for anything else.
SmartScan uses OCR (Optical Character Recognition) to recognize text in scanned documents, including multiple languages and scripts (such as Latin, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Devanagari) when you choose them. Language detection for Auto mode is also performed on your device. These features are provided using Google ML Kit libraries, including Text Recognition and Document Scanner, which run on your device.
When you use scanning and OCR features, processing of your images and text happens fully on your device. ML Kit does not send your document images, OCR text, or recognition results to Google servers, and the OCR text generated from your documents is stored locally on your device and is not sent to a SmartScan-operated server.
From time to time, ML Kit may contact Google servers to receive bug fixes, updated models, and hardware accelerator compatibility information. ML Kit also sends anonymized performance and utilization metrics about the ML Kit APIs in the app to Google. Google uses this metrics data to measure performance, debug, maintain, and improve the ML Kit APIs and detect misuse or abuse, as described in Google's Privacy Policy.
OCR technology may occasionally produce incorrect results. You should verify important information against the original document before relying on OCR results.
When you reorder, rotate, delete, split, merge, or sign PDF pages, all editing runs fully on your device. A drawn signature is stored only on your phone and leaves it solely inside PDFs you choose to share or back up to your own Google Drive.
Google Sign-In is used to connect your Google account to SmartScan when you choose to use Google Drive Backup.
When you sign in with Google, Google may provide SmartScan with basic account information associated with your Google account, such as your name, email address, profile information, and account identifier, depending on the permissions requested and granted.
This information is used to authenticate your Google account and provide Google Drive Backup.
SmartScan does not ask for your Google password.
Google handles authentication through its own services and processes information according to Google's applicable privacy policies and terms.
Google Drive Backup is an optional feature.
When you choose to use it, SmartScan requests permission to access Google Drive for the purpose of backing up or managing files associated with SmartScan.
Your selected documents are backed up to your own Google Drive account.
SmartScan does not operate a separate cloud storage service for your documents.
The files stored through Google Drive remain under your Google account and are subject to Google's privacy, security, and service policies.
You can stop using Google Drive Backup or remove SmartScan's access to your Google account through the available controls in SmartScan or your Google Account.
SmartScan may receive limited information necessary to provide Google-related features.
Depending on the feature you use, this may include:
SmartScan does not use your Google Drive documents or their contents for advertising.
The free version of SmartScan may display advertisements provided by Google AdMob.
SmartScan does not use the contents of your scanned documents or OCR text to select advertisements.
Advertising-related information may be processed by Google and its advertising partners according to their applicable policies.
SmartScan follows the applicable Google Play requirements for advertising based on the app's declared target audience.
Premium may remove advertisements, depending on the Premium features offered in the app.
SmartScan may use Google-provided analytics and crash-reporting services to help us understand how the application is used, identify crashes, diagnose technical problems, and improve the application.
These services may process technical information such as:
These services are not used by SmartScan to upload or analyze the contents of your scanned documents or OCR text.
Information processed by these services is subject to the applicable policies of the service provider.
If SmartScan offers Premium features for purchase, payments are processed through Google Play.
SmartScan does not receive or store your credit card, debit card, bank account, or other payment-card information.
Google Play handles payment processing and applicable purchase and refund procedures.

If you choose Google Drive Backup, your selected documents are sent to Google Drive because you requested the backup.
Your documents may exist in two places:
On your device: Your original scans and OCR information are stored locally by SmartScan.
In your Google Drive: If you enable Google Drive Backup, selected documents may also be stored in your own Google Drive account.
SmartScan does not create a separate cloud copy of your documents outside the Google services used by the app.

SmartScan is designed to keep document data on your device or in your own Google Drive when you choose to use backup.
You can delete documents stored locally using the available SmartScan controls.
Documents backed up to Google Drive can be deleted from your Google Drive.
If SmartScan provides an account or account-related feature, you may request deletion of account information associated with that feature through the account deletion option provided in the app or through the external account-deletion method provided by the developer.
Deleting SmartScan from your device does not automatically delete files that you previously backed up to Google Drive. You must manage those files through Google Drive.
SmartScan does not maintain its own cloud database containing your scanned documents.
Locally stored documents remain on your device until you delete them, clear the application's data, uninstall the application, or otherwise remove them.
Documents backed up to Google Drive remain in your Google Drive until you delete them or they are otherwise removed according to your Google Drive settings.
Information processed by third-party services such as Google Sign-In, Google Drive, Google AdMob, analytics/crash-reporting services, and Google Play is subject to those services' respective retention policies.
SmartScan is designed to minimize unnecessary collection of your information.
Your documents and OCR text are primarily processed and stored on your device.
When you use Google Drive Backup, your files are transmitted to Google Drive using Google's services.
You are responsible for protecting access to your device and Google account, including using appropriate device security and keeping your Google account credentials secure.
No electronic storage or transmission method can be guaranteed to be completely secure.
SmartScan is intended for users aged 13 and older.
SmartScan is not intended for children under 13.
If you are under 13, please do not use SmartScan.
The app's target audience is declared in Google Play's Target Audience and Content section. Google Play may apply additional requirements depending on the declared audience and applicable policies.
SmartScan uses Google services to provide certain features.
These may include:
ML Kit processing is performed on your device. Google's processing of ML Kit metrics data is described in Section 3 and in Google's Privacy Policy.
These services are provided and controlled by Google and may process information according to their own privacy policies and terms.
SmartScan does not control the privacy practices of these third-party services.
We may update this Privacy Policy when SmartScan's features, services, or privacy practices change.
When we make important changes, we will update the "Last Updated" date at the bottom of this policy and, where appropriate, provide additional notice through the application.
